Primary Household Activities
SDG 5 targets to recognize and value unpaid care work provided by the women of the household. Women’s unpaid work subsidizes the cost of care that sustains families, supports economies and often fills in for the lack of social services. Yet, it is rarely recognized as “work”. As per the 2019 Time Use Survey of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), women’s participation in unpaid domestic work is three times higher than that of men and their engagement in unpaid caregiving is also twice as high as that of men. The inordinate amount of time spent on unpaid care work diminishes women’s ability to engage in the social, political, economic and leisure spheres.

5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
While the world has achieved progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment under the Millennium Development Goals (including equal access to primary education between girls and boys), women and girls continue to suffer discrimination and violence in every part of the world.
Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.
Providing women and girls with equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large.
